New York Releases Lockdown July 1: Stores and Business Offices Open

Having managed to vaccinate a very large percentage of its 8.3 million inhabitants, the New York plans to “fully reopen” on July 1st. The move, announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio, comes more than a year after tough measures were taken to tackle the pandemic.

“We are ready to reopen the shops and offices of the companies, the theaters – in full force”, De Blasio told MSNBC.

The mayor said his optimism for the city’s imminent return to normalcy stemmed from the success of the mass immunization campaign. To date, approximately 6.3 million doses of vaccine have been administered to 8.3 million New Yorkers.

“What we are seeing is people being vaccinated to a great extent. We know that the vaccination effort will be intensified. “We have to keep working hard,” de Blasio added, according to APE-MPE.

It is unclear how the mayor’s plans will be reconciled with those of the governor of New York, which is responsible for running restaurants and other businesses. The mayor did not explain whether specific conditions will be set for those who want to watch a show or dine indoors, such as whether they should have a vaccination certificate at their disposal.

Currently, based on the instructions given by the state authorities and as noted by APE-MPE, those who wish to watch basketball games of the New York Yankees and the Mets should have taken a negative test for Covid-19 or have a vaccination certificate to enter the stadium. Spectators must not exceed 20% of the capacity of the stadiums.

Broadway theaters reopened this month for special events, with a limited number of spectators. Some producers aim to resume performances on June 1.
