A suspect was arrested after ten people were killed in a shooting at a supermarket in the city of Buffalo, New York, on Saturday afternoon (14), according to police.
Buffalo officials responded to the occurrence of a “multiple active shooting event” at Tops Markets on Jefferson Street, according to a statement from Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.
“Police say several people were shot. The shooter is in custody. Drivers and residents should avoid the area,” the Buffalo Police Department wrote.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office expressed its condolences via social media following the incident, adding that Sheriff John Garcia “ordered all resources and people available to assist” the police.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she is “closely monitoring the shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo. We offer assistance to local authorities. If you are in Buffalo, avoid the area and follow the directions of law enforcement and local authorities.”
According to Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, the gunman “traveled hours” from out of town to a predominantly black neighborhood. An FBI special agent in charge declared that the shooting is being investigated as a “hate crime” and a “racially motivated and extremely violent” act.
