New York Times: Russian generals discussed using nuclear weapons in Ukraine

THE Vladimir Putin has stressed many times that it will be used nuclear weapons from Russia if it is deemed necessary and publication of them New York Times states that there has just been a relevant discussion between Russians generalsso that they can be used in Ukraine.

The reason is said to be the situation at the front, since Moscow is not making the progress it seekswhile at the same time the war has caused a reshuffle in the Russian military leadershipwith career executives to be strongly criticized or to be removed from their positions.

Military experts say that the use of a nuclear weapon – for the first time in more than 75 years – would fundamentally change the nature of war. Although the resulting devastation would depend on many factors, including the size of the weapon and the winds, even a small nuclear explosion could cause thousands of deaths and render parts of Ukraine uninhabitable.

So while the risk of further escalation remains alarmingly high, Biden administration officials and US allies also say the telephone conversations between Western and Russian officials at the end of last month contributed to the easing of some nuclear tensions. A speech by Mr. Putin last Thursday in which he denied that Moscow was preparing to use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine further lowered the temperature, according to some of the officials.
