The bill was submitted to the New York Assembly Committee on Electoral Law and provides for the launch of a series of measures to study the capabilities of blockchain technologies in the field of protecting the personal data of voters and election results.
The bill defines the blockchain as a “decentralized and cryptographically protected system”, which “guarantees data immutability and verification”.
According to Vanel, the introduction of a blockchain into the electoral system can be a step in strengthening the trust of residents of the state to democratic processes and an instrument for ensuring the transparency and honesty of the elections.
If the Vanel initiative is approved, then the election commission and management of New York information technology services, in cooperation with experts in blockchain, cybersecurity and electoral systems, will be required to submit considerations to the New York Assembly in the next 12 months.
Earlier, computer security specialists of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) said that blockchain technologies will not make the elections safer, but on the contrary, increase the risks of hacking the electoral system.
