New York will test an application on the IBM blockchain to store data on vaccinations against COVID-19

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a pilot program to test an application on the IBM blockchain to store vaccination data and validate COVID-19 test results.

According to Andrew Cuomo, IBM’s Excelsior Pass healthcare application will be tested at the Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The blockchain-based app will allow people to share their health data through an encrypted digital wallet stored on their smartphones. The Excelsior Pass will store vaccination data and test results for COVID-19.

“As we remove restrictions in various sectors of the economy, we are developing guidelines to ensure that people attending public events test negative for COVID-19 or have been vaccinated. This is necessary to avoid repeated outbreaks of the virus. The Excelsior Pass will play an important role in providing secure and optimized access to facilities, allowing us to accelerate the opening of these facilities and move us one step closer to achieving the new norm, ”said Cuomo.

Steve LaFleche, CEO of IBM Public and Federal Market, also commented on the initiative:

“This decision could provide New York and other states with a simple, safe and voluntary method of proving a negative COVID-19 test or vaccination certificate. IBM is proud to support New York State in its efforts to apply innovative technologies to help residents and communities respond to COVID-19. ”

Recall that in January it became known that the coronavirus testing center at Frankfurt Airport is using the UBIRCH solution based on IOTA technology to store and protect information about travelers who have passed tests.
