New Yorkers accused Greenidge Generation of green mining

Greenidge Generation is an unsustainable mining company that has caused a dramatic rise in water temperatures in Lake Seneca, according to upstate New Yorkers.

Citizens living near the Greenidge mining farms on the shores of Lake Seneca in upstate New York complained about her to a local TV channel. They are alarmed that the temperature of Lake Seneca has risen significantly since Bitcoin mining began in the region.

This is not the first time Greenidge has faced claims. Last month, the local population also staged a protest against her, claiming that the power plant pollutes the air and heats Lake Seneca due to the use of fossil fuels.

“The lake is heating up so much that it seems like you are in a hot bath,” complained a local resident.

However, Greenidge, owned by private equity firm Atlas Holdings, said the lakeside mining farm has the necessary environmental permits. According to Greenidge’s permission, the plant can use 139 million gallons of water every day to cool 8,000 computers and discharge 135 million gallons of water at temperatures up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 degrees Celsius) in summer and 30 degrees Celsius in winter.

Greenidge CEO Jeff Kirt said the facility has no significant environmental impact. According to him, the average water temperature is about half of the established level. According to local media, a full thermal study of the lake has not been carried out, and it will take place no earlier than 2023.

Greenidge will renew its work permit in September and is going to phase out the use of natural gas. The local TV station also reported that not all residents of the region are opposed to Greenidge, as it sent large donations to local schools and the fire department. In addition, the power plant creates new jobs.

Atlas Holdings recently raised $ 3 billion and said it plans to quadruple its bitcoin mining capacity by the end of the year. In addition, Greenidge intends to expand its operations in South Carolina this year by creating a zero-carbon mining facility in Spartanburg.

Lawmakers in New York are worried about the rapid development of the mining industry. They believe that if the New York authorities do not impose restrictions on the mining of cryptocurrencies, miners can use at least 30 power plants. This will jeopardize the implementation of the state program for the development of “green” energy.

In May, a bill was presented to the New York State Senate committee for a three-year moratorium on mining pending environmental review.
