The PTWC, Hawaii Tsunami Warning Center, issued a warning for tidal waves up to three meters across the Pacific Ocean after a very strong 7.8-8.1 magnitude quake near Kermandek, a cluster of uninhabited belonging to New Zealand.
The PTWC said three-meter-high waves could hit Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Smaller waves may reach countries far away from the epicenter, such as Japan, Russia, Mexico and the coasts of South America.
New Zealand authorities have ordered the evacuation of coastal areas on the North Island. The quake, which centered about 1,000 kilometers away, did not appear to have caused any damage.
«Those who are close to the beach in the following zones should immediately climb the nearest hills or move as far inland as possible.Said the National Crisis Management Agency. “Do not stay in your homes!” warned.
The warning sirens of the residents sounded and workers and residents were evacuated from areas such as Northland and Bay of Plenty.
