New Zealand has approved the use of the Pfizer formulation for children aged 5-11

New Zealand health regulator Medsafe on Thursday issued an emergency authorization for the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in children aged 5 to 11, the Oceania Ministry of Health said.

The license concerns the administration of two doses of the pediatric vaccine, with the second being made at least 21 days after the first, according to the announcement.

If approved by the cabinet under Prime Minister Jacinda Arden, vaccination of children in this age group will begin in January 2022, according to the ministry.

The announcement came as New Zealand surpassed the full vaccination threshold of COVID-19 in 90% of its population.

The country has now been fully vaccinated 3,788,151 people, said Chris Hippins, the minister responsible for dealing with the pandemic.
