The New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency has dismissed order to evacuate from coastal areas immediately due to the risk of being hit by a tsunami, assuring that “the biggest waves have passed”, following a series of three strong earthquakes.
“All those who have been displaced from their homes can now return,” said the agency, which had earlier asked tens of thousands of people to rush to higher-altitude areas and the interior of the North Island.
The tsunami caused the third and strongest of the earthquakes (7.2, 7.4 and 8.1 degrees) occurred near the remote and uninhabited Kermandek Islands, without causing any damage or injury to New Zealand.
