Newborn abandoned under a car, mother arrested

He was naked, with his umbilical cord cut and on the street, but the newborn abandoned this morning in Osilo, in the Sassari area, is still alive. According to local newspapers, the child showed signs of hypothermia. He was immediately taken to the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari and is fine. The military tracked down the mother. The 29-year-old was hospitalized in the same Sassari facility and is under arrest for attempted murder.

The little boy could have been on the street, under a parked car, for a few hours already, according to reconstructions, when he was rescued by the ambulance and the police. The woman apparently gave birth at dawn in the house where she lives with her parents and grandparents. Everyone says they didn’t realize she was pregnant. She alone would have also cut the umbilical cord. However, it would have been one of the women of the house, her great-grandmother, who noticed what had happened and raised the alarm.

To the Unione Sarda the words of the head of the Neonatal Intensive Care and Maternal and Infant Neonatology department of the Aou of Sassari, Dr. Maria Antonia Cossu: «The little one is fine, he arrived in our department around six in the morning. He weighs 2,615 kilos and is in good general condition. We started feeding. We decided to call him Francesco.”

The conditions of the newborn abandoned in Osilo and found this morning are good: the little one is hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care and neonatal neonatal unit of the Aou of Sassari. The doctors named him Francesco.

Speaks

In this case at least one of the parents is known, even if there has been no official registration, and therefore adoptability by the Juvenile Court should not automatically be triggered. The law provides that children born to a mother who did not wish to be named (this is written in the deed) can access the medical records and therefore the mother’s name only 100 years after birth. There are around 200 cases per year.

Those who abandon a child on the street, despite the possibility of giving birth anonymously in hospital, risk much more. In Monza in the summer of last year a little girl was left in a box on the bonnet of a car in front of the San Gerardo hospital. Anyone who abandons a minor risks 5 years in prison.
