Newborn died in Rome, the father: “My partner asked to take him to the nursery, they said no”

Talk to the newspaper The messenger, the father of the newborn who died in Rome, at the Pertini hospital, between 7 and 8 January, suffocated in bed after being breastfed by his mother. «They abandoned her at Pertini, my partner couldn’t stand up after 17 hours of labor, but was forced to take care of the baby right away. She had asked to take the baby to the nursery to be able to rest for a few hours, but they said no ». The man explains that his wife had chosen Pertini because she herself was born there.

«They left it next to her continuously and with the Covid regulations none of us were able to stay next to her. And she, even though she is 29 years old, was very tired, her baby was restless, you never let her sleep. So she spent the nights without sleeping a wink. But my son was fine, he apparently he was healthy in all respects. Now we are waiting to know the result of the autopsy and we have entrusted the case to a lawyer. In fact, the exact cause of death is still unknown and we still don’t have many answers. We trust the investigations,” he explained. The parents of the newborn are asking for truth, but also for justice and want to know if it was an avoidable tragedy also to help other parents.

The death was declared at 1:40 in the night. According to the first reconstructions, the nurse on duty who entered the room for the usual checks saw that the baby was not moving. I took him from her mother’s arms without her waking up. Hence the alarm, the resuscitation attempts and the awakening of her mother. «My partner called me screaming, she told me to run to the hospital. But when I arrived there was nothing more they could do. They told us they tried to revive him, but they didn’t even wake her up, she opened her eyes by herself and they had already taken him away ».

Dad adds again. «The thing that doesn’t give us peace is that it could happen to anyone, and it happened to us. Nothing can give us back our child, but we don’t want other parents to experience our same nightmare. It is not right for women to be left alone in the wards after giving birth. If it hasn’t happened to other mothers, it’s only because they were lucky.”

The prosecutor has opened a manslaughter case. The autopsy will serve to understand the causes of death. There would have been no abnormalities in the birth and the three and a half kilo newborn was fine. However, there are also check times and attendances in the ward to be understood: there are four nurses between the nursery and the rooms and checks are made every three hours. Then there is the condition of the mother to be clarified, whose sleep was very deep and for which toxicological tests have been ordered.
