News at Buckingham Palace: the new Lord Chamberlain to the Queen is a «007»

A big change is about to take place at Buckingham Palace. Lord Peel, 73 years old, the Lord chamberlain of the Queen Elizabeth II in office since 2006, he will retire next March. In its place will come the barone Andrew Parker, 59 years old, behind thirty-seven years in the secret services of the United Kingdom and chief dell’MI5 (Military Intelligence, Section 5) from 2013 to 2020. It is the first time that a “007” becomes the top manager of the British royal house as well as right arm of the sovereign.

The baron, who will enter service on April 1st, will have a lot to do. The Lord Chamberlain – to name a few of his many duties – oversees the actions of the Crown, acts as a communication channel between the Queen and the House of Lords, organize the royal wedding and all the official commitments of Her Majesty (from garden parties to state visits), manages the possessions of the monarchy, deals with royal stables. All for a salary of approx 102,600 euros a year.

The Lord Chamberlain has a prestige that derives from his practical duties but also from his historical figure. The first appointment dates back to 1399 e the British court was left without a Lord Chamberlain only twice: the first in 1649, for a period of six years, the second in 1679, when William III did not accept the resignation of Count Suderland and the office remained vacant for two years.

Lord Peel he was head of the Royal House for fourteen years, in an important period for the Crown in which it had to organize, to say, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, in 2012. The 73-year-old, in the spring of last year, announced his intention to go retired at the end of 2020. But the pandemic gives coronavirus, and the consequent difficulty in finding a replacement, had convinced him a to remain. Now the replacement is there, and he’s a former 007. Lord Peel, when on March 31 he will take his leave of the queen, he will be sure to leave her in good hands.
