With two fans from scrap metal and a few cables 15-year-old Hussam Al-Attar built his own power source to light the tent where he and his family live, near Rafa, after being forced to leave their home due to war in the Gaza Strip.
In recognition of his intelligence, his neighbors in the refugee camp gave him the nickname “Gaza's Newton”, describes the Athens Agency.

“They started calling me names Newton her Gaza because of the resemblance between me and Newton,” says Hussam Al-Attar who looks and sounds younger than his 15 years.
“Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head and he discovered gravity. We too live here in darkness and tragedy, and rockets fall on our heads. So I thought of creating light and I made it,” he said, retelling the story that captured the popular imagination of the learned English scientist who revolutionized Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The Al-Attar family set up their tent on the side of a one-story house, which allowed Hussam to climb onto the roof and install his two fans, one on top of the other, to act as tiny wind turbines capable of charging batteries.
He then connected the fans to cables running down the wall of the house and used switches, light bulbs and a thin piece of plywood connecting the wall to the tent to create a private lighting system for his family in his third attempt after the first two failed attempts.
“I was very happy to be able to do this, because it eased the suffering of my family, my mother, my sick father and my brother's little children and everyone here who suffers from the conditions we live in at war.”
“I am very happy that the people in this camp call me the Newton of Gaza, because I hope to realize my dream of becoming a scientist like Newton and inventing something that will benefit not only the people of the Gaza Strip, but the entire world”.
