Next Islamic State leader will face the same fate, says Biden aide

Brett McGurck, the White House coordinator in charge of the Middle East and North Africa regions, described Wednesday’s attack that led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, also known as “Hajji Abdullah” as going “almost exactly according to plan” and said the US would continue to carry out other operations to contain ISIS.

“He proceeded almost exactly according to plan,” McGurck told Victor Blackwell of the CNN, while noting the mechanical problems that led to the controlled destruction of a US helicopter.

McGurck also explained that President Biden was first briefed on the parameters of the potential mission about six weeks ago, in early December.

“At that first meeting in December, we went over in exquisite detail what would have to happen to do everything possible to take care of those families on the first floor,” McGurck said, referring to the civilians in the building with the IS leader.

McGurck also issued a warning to anyone taking over the organization after Qurayshi’s death, saying this is a “significant blow” to ISIS. He added that there would be follow-up operations to continue trying to reduce ISIS’s ability to carry out attacks.

“Make no mistake, whoever ISIS names as Hajji Abdullah will surely meet the same fate,” McGurck said.
