Ney Latorraca starred in one of the first gay kisses in Brazilian cinema

The actor Ney Latorraca who died this Thursday (26), aged 80, left his mark on theater, television and cinema. On the big screen, he was responsible for starring in one of the first gay kisses in cinema history .

The scene in question took place in “The Kiss on the Asphalt “, film by Bruno Barreto released in 1981. Based on the play by Nelson Rodrigues, the title tells the story of a man who was run over and about to die, who asks Arandir (Ney Latorraca) for a kiss on the mouth.

The event, however, becomes a scandal in the sensationalist press, and the man who gave the kiss (Tarcísio Meira) begins to suffer from society’s prejudice. The police then begin to investigate him, believing that the accident was a murder.

The film became a cult film and, in 2017, received a new version directed by Murilo Benício. The most recent production featured Débora Falabella, Fernanda Montenegro and Lázaro Ramos in the cast.

Although it caused great repercussion at the time, the kiss between Ney Latorraca and Tarcísio Meira was not the first gay kiss in Brazilian cinema. This milestone was achieved by Anselmo Vasconcellos and Tonico Pereira who starred in the first gay kiss on screen in “Republic of Assassins “, released in 1979.

“O Beijo no Asfalto”, by Bruno Barrato, is available for streaming on Globoplay , Locke and Prime Video .
