NGO asks for BRL 1 million in lawsuit against CBF alleging mistreatment of “World Cup cat”

The National Forum for Animal Protection and Defense filed a lawsuit against the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) alleging mistreatment of the cat that “invaded” the press conference of Brazilian national team striker Vinicius Jr. on Wednesday (7).

The play demands that the CBF make a public retraction and pay a fine of R$ 1 million. The intention, according to the Forum, is that the value be directed to a fund that would be used for the “benefit of the community”.

In the episode, after the cat appeared on the microphone table, CBF advisor Vinicius Rodrigues grabbed the animal by the skin on its back and removed it from the scene. The way Vinicius treated the animal had a negative impact on social media.

According to the Legal Director of the Animal Forum, Ana Paula Vasconcelos, the action has an educational character. “We believe in the educational character of the action and that the rights and dignity of animals are an object of reflection for society as a whole”, says Vasconcelos.

“The images that travel the world are setting bad examples to encourage cruel practices towards animals and even reinforce the stigma that animals can be treated as a thing and not as the sentient and conscious beings that they are”, argues the note from the NGO.

THE CNN contacted the CBF and awaits a response.
