Nicaragua dismisses the country’s ambassador to Brazil

Nicaragua confirmed, this Thursday (16), the dismissal of the country’s ambassador to Brazil, Lorena del Carmen Martínez. The person who will replace her has not been announced.

The Nicaraguan representative had been in the role since 2013. The reason for leaving was not informed. The exchange takes place exactly nine days after the Brazilian government announced shelter for migrants who wish to leave the Central American country.

A CNN learned from Brazilian diplomats that the change in the embassy is a natural move. Also according to these sources, the initiative for the exchange came from the government of Nicaragua.

Officially, the Itamaraty reported that “the processes for replacing ambassadors with the Brazilian government are routine and confidential until the agrément is granted. Brazil does not give public treatment about agrément processes.”

A report by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, released in March, accused the Nicaraguan dictatorship of crimes against humanity for its repression against regime dissidents.

At the time, the Brazilian government avoided condemning the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and did not join a motion of repudiation signed by more than 50 countries.

Days later, in a new meeting of the Council and under criticism inside and outside the country, the diplomacy of the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) showed concern about “serious violations of human rights in Nicaragua” and defended a constructive way out of the crisis.
