Nicholas Galitzine says he feels like a “piece of meat” on the shelf

The British actor Nicholas Galitzine said that the focus on his appearance makes him feel like a “piece of meat on the grocery store shelf,” and that he wants to be “taken seriously as an artist.”

The 29-year-old actor, who stars opposite Anne Hathaway in the new romantic comedy “An Idea of You” admitted that comments about his appearance make him uncomfortable in an interview with the magazine GQ.

Galitzine was asked how he felt playing a character considered beautiful.

He responded: “I think the most important thing for me is to be taken seriously as an artist. I’m not going to ask you to be sad for me, but it’s been hard to be part of a conversation where I feel like I’m a piece of meat on the grocery store shelf.”

The actor said he noticed this not only during the casting process, but also in other people's reactions to his work.

“I think that [ser bonito] being my defining characteristic is something that constantly terrifies me,” he said.

In his new film, Galitzine — who also stars in “Mary & George” with Julianne Moore and last year’s “Red, White and Blue Bloods” — plays the lead singer of a popular boy band who embarks on an unexpected romance with a single mother, played by Hathaway, after meeting her at Coachella.

There has been much speculation about whether his role as Hayes Campbell, the singer of the fictional boy band August Moon, is based on Harry Styles.

He admitted that Styles is “an obvious comparison” but added: “I think it’s really important that we don’t make too many comparisons to him because [Styles] is a real person, both in the music industry and in the film industry.”

“I think we need to normalize [mantê-los separados] instead of drawing a direct parallel with someone who already exists,” he said.
