THE Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, 72, announced that he will leave the band after 42 years of participation . This Saturday (7) he used the band’s social networks to inform fans about the decision — who said he already had a replacement .
“After much consideration, it is with sadness and joy that I announce my decision to take a step back from the routine of the extensive touring lifestyle. Today, Saturday, December 7th, in São Paulo, will be my last show with Iron Maiden. I wish the band much success in the future”, says the text.
According to the drummer, even away from the stage he will continue to participate in projects with the band and other members — citing the ventures he created in parallel over the years on the road.
“Touring with Maiden for the past 42 years has been an incredible journey! To my dedicated fan base, you made it all worth it and I love you! To my devoted wife, Rebecca, you have made everything infinitely easier and I love you! To my sons, Justin and Nicholas, thank you for understanding absences and I love you!” McBrain wrote.
And he concluded: “I look to the future with great enthusiasm and great hope!”
In response to the musician’s statement, Iron Maiden singer Rod Smallwood, 74, responded to his colleague with a text published on the band’s official website. He thanked McBrain for his participation in the group and said he will miss his friend.
“Since Rock in Rio in 1985, we have had a special relationship with Brazil, so coming out of the tour in front of 90,000 fans here in São Paulo for two nights is poetic and you deserve all the praise that I am sure these wonderful fans they will give it to you at this last show”, said the singer, signing for the other members.
“The band and I have thousands of great memories from the last 42 years, great shows, many platinum and gold records and awards, love from fans and an extra beer on many occasions! This bond is eternal!”, reflected Smallwood in the statement.
Iron Maiden perform in São Paulo this Friday (6) and this Saturday in a show part of the world tour “The Future Past Tour” which also features performances in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the United States, Colombia and Chile.
