The former Prime Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon pleaded not guilty, after she was released after arrested and detained for seven hours as part of a police investigation for the funds directed to the Scottish National Party (SNP).
The investigation is looking into what happened to more than £600,000 raised by Scottish independence campaigners in 2017, which was to be used to organize an independence referendum and is suspected to have been used for other purposes.
The arrest of Nicola Sturgeon is a blow to the SNP which has dominated Scottish political life for more than two decades. Following Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation, support for both the party and the cause of Scottish independence has waned.
“To find myself in the position I am today when I am certain I have done nothing wrong is both shocking and deeply saddening… I would never do anything to harm either the SNP or the country,” Nicola Sturgeon said in a post on Twitter.
“Given the nature of this process, I cannot go into details. However, I want to say this… I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am truly innocent of any wrongdoing.”

Earlier, a spokesperson for Sturgeon said that after consultation she attended a hearing with Police Scotland, was subsequently arrested and questioned and is co-operating with the investigation.
In April, Nicola Sturgeon’s husband Peter Murrell and former party treasurer Colin Beattie were arrested and later released without charge pending further investigation.
