Police in northern Niger found and seized more than 200 kilograms of cocaine, valued at about $ 8.7 million, in the mayor’s official car, two African law enforcement sources told Reuters on Monday.
The mayor and his driver, who were riding in the vehicle, were arrested after 199 packages of cocaine were found at a checkpoint on a road in northern Niger, just outside the Agadez commercial junction in the desert, sources said.
A statement from the Drug Enforcement Administration (OCRTIS) confirmed that a record 200 kilograms of cocaine had been seized in Agadez, but without elaborating.
In West Africa, which is often part of the drug trafficking route from South America to Europe, several record seizures have been reported in recent years.
Senegal, for example, seized more than two tonnes of pure cocaine found on a ship off the coast of the Atlantic in October; the Gambia seized nearly three tonnes of cocaine in January, a quantity from Ecuador.
Following the seizure of 17 tonnes of cannabis by Nigerian authorities in May, Interpol’s anti-drug coordinator Jan Drapal told Reuters that drug lords were now handling much larger quantities due to the increase. demand in Europe.
