Niger: At least 32 dead from the floods of the last months

Heavy rains that have lashed Niger since last June have killed at least 32 people and affected more than 66,000, according to authorities in the West African country.

In particular, according to the Civil Protection data, until August 14, 15 drownings and 17 deaths from house collapses had been reported. 44 people were injured, while those affected by the disaster are estimated at 66,781.

In the previous count, which was made public on August 4, the authorities of Niger spoke of 24 dead and more than 50,000 affected.

The worst affected areas are Zinder (central east), Difa (south east) and Tillaberi (south west). The rains damaged more than 7,000 houses and destroyed health centers, shops and granaries.

The rainy season in Niger (from June to August or September) has caused dozens of deaths and great destruction in recent years. In 2021, at least 70 people had lost their lives, while those affected were estimated at more than 200,000, according to UN figures.
