The United States on Monday opposed the possibility of bringing Niger’s president, Mohamed Bazum, to trial by the military junta that took power on charges of “high treason”.
“We are (…) upset about the information that the unjust detention of President Bazum has gone a step further”his deputy spokesman, Vedant Patel, said during the briefing of accredited editors at the State Department.
Sunday night, The military junta that seized power on July 26 in Niamey announced that it was gathering “evidence in order to bring to trial before the national and international competent authorities the ousted president” Bazoum, “along with his accomplices”, for “high treason” and ” security breach” of Niger.
“This action is completely unnecessary and unjustified”emphasized Mr. Patel, discounting that “it will certainly not contribute to the peaceful resolution of this crisis”.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a telephone conversation with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Monday. The foreign minister praised the Nigerian president’s “leadership role” in the Economic Community of West African States and urged him to “keep the pressure” on the coup plotters in Niamey, according to a press release issued by his services.
