Fifteen people were killed and one is missing after a passenger boat was swept away by high tide and capsized in the financial capital of NigeriaLagos, emergency services announced today.
The tragedy occurred on Friday night, two days after two people died in another boat accident in this city of more than 20 million inhabitants.
“There were 16 passengers on board at the time of the accident“, Ibrahim Farinlogie, of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told AFP and relayed by the Athens News Agency.
According to him, four bodies were recovered yesterday Saturday and today Sunday the rescue services recovered another 11 bodies. The sixteenth passenger had not been located as of Sunday evening.
According to Sarat Braiham, Regional Director of the Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA), the vessel “violated the regulations […] sailing at 7:45 p.m.».
THE tide drifted the boat and then it capsized, he said, adding that the passengers did not have life jackets.
