Nigeria: 28 students abducted, another 81 held captive

The kidnappers who raided a boarding school to the north Nigeria, earlier this month, released 28 children today, but another 81 remain in captivity, according to a pastor who was involved in negotiations for their release.

The attack on the Bethel Baptist High School in the state of Cantuna is the 10th massive student abduction from a school, since December, in northwestern Nigeria, which authorities attribute to criminal gangs seeking ransom.

A first group of 28 children was released two days after the raid. “Twenty-eight students were released this morning,” Reverend Joseph Hayabb told Reuters by telephone. “A number of students managed to escape; but 81 remain prisoners.”

Nigerian authorities attribute the abductions to armed gangs of robbers seeking ransom.

Police and the Cantona State Homeland Security Inspector have not yet commented.
