At least 140 people have been killed by gunmen during attacks this week in the northwestern Nigerian state of Zamfara, four residents told AFP today.
“We have buried a total of 143 people killed by the gangs in these attacks,” said one of the residents, Balarab Alhaji, the head of one of the villages affected by the attacks in Zamfara. This report has not yet been confirmed by the authorities.
Hundreds of militants, who arrived on motorcycles, launched attacks Wednesday and Thursday in ten villages in the Anka and Bukuyum districts, firing on residents, looting and setting houses on fire, residents said.
Nigerian officials have not yet commented on the attacks.
A resident of the village of Kurfa Dania, Babadi Hamidou, said the gunmen opened fire on anyone they saw in the village without warning.
“More than 140 people have been buried in the ten villages and the search for other bodies is ongoing because there are many missing,” Hamidou said.
Indi Musa, a resident of another village, said “the death toll is huge” and spoke of “150 people killed by the gangs”.
Another resident, who gave only his first name, Babangida, cited the same report.
Northwestern and central Nigeria has long been the scene of criminal gangs attacking, looting and abducting villagers whose animals have been stolen and their homes burned.
