Nigeria: At least 30 dead from criminal attacks in villages in Zamfara

Gunmen have killed at least 30 civilians in Zamfara Nigeria, launching raids against eight villages of this state, which has been plagued by a security crisis for more than two years, said residents and sources close to the security forces.

In northwestern Nigeria lethal attacks are recorded and abductions have risen sharply, sometimes massive, and violent crime by the end of 2020. The government finds it difficult to enforce law and order amid a withering economy.

According to the APE-MPE, three residents reported that the attacks in eight villages started on Tuesday afternoon by about 300 criminals who were riding motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately.

Abubakar Bello, a resident who escaped to escape an attack, told Reuters by telephone that a local paramilitary group was in a very difficult position as criminals, outnumbered, set fire to homes and shops.

Another resident, Omaru Makeri, said he lost his wife and their three children in one of the attacks, while his house was set on fire. “The villages of Kourfa and Rafin-Gero (…) have been under siege for two days now (…) there are no security forces anywhere“, Said Mr. Makeri.

In the state of Zamfara, which is among those most affected by the abductions, telecommunications have been cut off since early September, which was imposed by the authorities to facilitate communication between the criminals and to facilitate the work of the armed forces.

However, it also means that few people actually know what is happening in Zamfara, as the authorities do not inform.

A spokesman for the state governor, Zamfara, told Reuters that gunmen had been stopped by the army, but declined to give details.

State police spokesman Mohamed Sehou could not be reached for comment.
