Eight people have been killed after a three-storey building collapsed in a district of Lagos, Nigeria’s financial capital, emergency services said today.
The building collapsed for unknown reasons around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, rescuers said, rescuing 23 people from the rubble.
The ground floor and first floor of the building in the Ebute Meta district were used as warehouses, while the second and third floors were residences, Ibrahim Farinlogie from the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) told French.
“We retrieved eight bodies and 23 people were rescued with varying degrees of injuries and are being treated in health facilities,” he said.
“We are continuing to dig into the rubble in search of potential victims,” he added, adding that an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the building’s collapse.
Such disasters are common in Nigeria, where architectural standards and building maintenance are often overlooked.
In November, the collapse of a skyscraper under construction in Lagos killed 45 workers at the construction site.
Three people were also killed when a church collapsed in January in Port Harcourt, Niger Delta.
A study by a South African researcher has identified 152 buildings that have collapsed in Lagos since 2005.
