Nigeria: militants kill at least 23 in attack, security sources say

At least 23 farmers and fishermen were killed and others kidnapped by alleged Islamic militants in the state of Borno, northeastern Nigeria, this week, security sources and local residents reported to Reuters.

Nigeria faces a longtime insurgency in the northeast of the country, driven mainly by the Islamic armed group Boko Haram and its branch, the province of the Islamic State of West Africa.

The last attack took place in the village of Malam Karanti on Thursday morning (15), security sources and residents said.

An Nigerian Army spokesman did not respond to phone calls and text messages requesting comments.

The local resident Sani Auwal said by telephone that militants brought together farmers and fishermen near the village and killed 23 people, many of them beans producers. They spared an elderly man who later warned the community, he said.

Another local resident, Usman there, said the community tried to recover the bodies of the dead, but was expelled by the militants.

Last month, the governor of Borno acknowledged that Boko Haram had renewed attacks and kidnappings in the state, reversing previous gains from security forces.
