Islamic court in northern Bauchi State Nigeria today sentenced three men to death by stoning after finding them guilty of “crimes» related to homosexualityannounced the head of the religious police who arrested them.
The people of northern Nigeria are predominantly Muslim, and the States use Islamic courts that apply sharia to punish “crimes” such as adultery and blasphemy.
Adam Dan Caffey, the head of the Hisbah religious police in Bauchi’s Ningi district said the three men were arrested on June 14 and arraigned in court. All of them “they confessed to the crime” although he was not represented by a lawyer, Caffey said.
The one of those convicted is 70 years old. All of them can appeal within 30 days.
The death penalty imposed by Islamic courts in Nigeria must then be approved by the governor of each State.
