A meeting was held in Nigeria in the case of the head of the department for combating financial crimes of the Binance crypto exchange, Tigran Gambaryan, who was detained in the country, locals write mass media. He is charged with four counts of money laundering and operating without a license.
The top manager refused to plead guilty. He stated that he was not responsible for the company's decisions and activities. According to Gambaryan, he personally did not violate the legal framework of Nigeria, and his detention is illegal.
The authorities rejected the arguments of the top manager who is in custody. The court noted that under Nigerian law, a person representing the interests of a company may be charged for its activities.
According to the authorities, Gambaryan is responsible for Binance’s illegal actions. In addition, the court also believes that the top manager can be convicted on the charges brought against his colleague, who previously escaped from custody.
The regional head of the Binance exchange for East and West Africa, Nadeem Anjarwalla, managed to escape from Nigerian law enforcement agencies using a Kenyan passport.
Further consideration of the case was postponed until April 18, 2024. Gambaryan's lawyer demanded that his client be returned to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). However, the prosecution insisted on keeping him in Kuje prison, located in the suburbs of the capital of Nigeria.
It is worth noting that this institution became famous after the attack by militants of the Islamic State group (an organization designated as a terrorist organization) in 2022. The ISIS attack killed five people and led to the escape of 879 prisoners.
Anjarwalla and Gambaryan have been detained in Nigeria since late February 2024. They were invited by local authorities to discuss the activities of the exchange in the country. After the first meeting, the company's employees were ordered to pack up and moved into a house under the supervision of the Nigerian National Security Agency. Subsequently, Anjarwalla managed to flee the country.
