This Sunday (12), US military shot down a flying object that flew near sensitive military areas. It was the third case in which the Pentagon shot down an unidentified flying device in recent days.
Brazil has already experienced a similar situation 37 years ago, on May 19, 1986, in the episode that became known as the “official night of the UFOs” or “night of the flying saucers”.
According to the records of the Ministry of Justice, that day, at least 21 unidentified flying objects were detected by the radars of the Integrated Center for Air Defense and Air Traffic Control (Cindacta).
Five Brazilian Air Force (FAB) jets were sent to pursue them, but none were successful.
“It all started when the operator of the tower at São José dos Campos Airport, São Paulo, observed light points that changed color, with a predominance of red tones, and asked the pilot Alcir Pereira if he was seeing the same thing”, reports the Ministry.
“After Alcir’s confirmation, the Control Tower in São Paulo captured unidentified signals and Cindacta I, in Brasília, detected UFOs on the radars of Goiás, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Because of the speed of the objects, the Air Defense Operations Center (CODA) decided to send fighter jets to chase and intercept them. However, none of the five fighters managed to come close to the UFOs”, he adds.
At the report of the incident made by the Air Command of Air Defense of the Ministry of Aeronautics signed by Brigadier José Pessoa Cavalcanti Albuquerque, it is reported that “the phenomena are solid and reflect intelligence in a certain way, due to the ability to follow and maintain distance from observers as well as to fly in formation, not necessarily manned”.
The National Archives of Brazil has audio recordings of communications between the authorities and an official report of this night’s event.

The National Archive has in its collection at least 743 records about the appearance of UFOs in Brazil, between 1952 and 2016.
“This does not mean that 743 flying saucers were seen, but any object in the sky that it was not possible to immediately discover its natural origin. That is, a UFO in this case can be a drone, a star, a satellite, a weather balloon or even a natural phenomenon”, explains the Ministry of Justice.
