Night traffic ban in Guadeloupe due to riots over coronavirus measures

A night curfew was imposed in Guadeloupe after five days of social unrest over health protocols and measures coronavirus, with roadblocks set up and burned in the streets and firefighters and doctors going on strike and clashing with police forces.

Her prefect GuadeloupeAlexandre Rosate, who represents the government in the Caribbean archipelago, said the night-time curfew would be in effect from 6pm until 5pm. The sale of petrol in cans will also be banned, he added.

“In light of the social unrest and the acts of vandalism, the governor of Guadeloupe has decided to impose a night-time curfew,” Rosate’s office said in a Twitter post.

The unions went on indefinite strike on Monday in protest of the mandatory vaccination of health workers against Covid-19 and health insurance requirements.

Protesters set fire to cars and set up roadblocks in the streets. Videos posted on social media show police clashing with firefighters who were using fire hoses to repel police, and clouds of smoke could be seen over neighborhoods.

Earlier yesterday, Paris announced it would send 200 police officers to Guadeloupe to help quell the riots.

“Some people tell us, ‘You are paralyzing Guadeloupe,'” a protester told Canal 10. “I tell them, ‘Dear brothers and sisters, for a year and a half now, the government (…) has imposed restrictions on our daily lives.’
