Nightclub fire in Spain leaves at least 6 dead

At least six people died and four were injured in a fire this Sunday morning (1st) in a nightclub in Murcia, Spain, local authorities reported.

The injured are two women, aged 22 and 25, and two men, aged 41 and 45, who were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation, the Murcia emergency services website reported.

“Worried and dismayed by the news coming from there (Murcia). Emergency services continue to operate,” the president of the Murcia region posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Emergency services were sent to the scene, and firefighters requested helicopter support from the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies, according to authorities. However, they later highlighted that ground resources were sufficient to put out the fire.

“The Director General of Security and Emergencies, Ricardo Villalba, is on site coordinating with Murcia authorities the necessary means to manage this tragedy”, informed the emergency services.

“The vice-president and minister of the Interior, Emergencies and Spatial Planning, José Ángel Antelo, is expected to arrive at the scene”, they added.

An information area for victims’ families has been set up in the nearby Palacio de los Deportes, where a team of psychologists will be in charge of providing assistance.
