Nikki Haley makes final push in New Hampshire as Trump steps up attacks

Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley will campaign in New Hampshire this weekend in a final swipe at Republican rival Donald Trump before Tuesday's nomination fight, as the former US president steps up his verbal attacks and again exposed the competitor's Indian origin.

Haley, who served as US ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, hit back at her former boss's comments following his victory in the Iowa caucuses last Monday, in an attempt to thwart his momentum and present herself as the better alternative. to face Democratic President Joe Biden in the November general election.

New Hampshire boasts a more moderate brand of Republicanism, with a semi-open primary that could attract more centrist voters who may be disheartened by Trump's four criminal cases, authoritarian language and efforts to overturn his 2020 re-election defeat.

One of two remaining candidates challenging Trump for the Republican nomination, Haley needs a strong showing after coming in third behind Florida Governor Ron DeSantis while Trump won handily in Iowa, the first stop in the state-by-state battle to determine the party's choice to face Biden.

The second Republican contest could help her gain support as a viable alternative to Trump — or close her already narrow path to the nomination, even before she gets to the South Carolina race next month.

Haley is expected to tour independent-leaning New Hampshire, with three stops before a rally on Saturday and four more events on Sunday and Monday.

Haley lobbed some barbs at Trump during his final round of campaigning in New Hampshire, while balancing criticism with attacks on Biden and telling CNN she would pardon Trump if he were convicted on criminal charges.

On Friday, however, she ruled out serving as his vice presidential running mate as he continued to criticize her, including again mentioning her first name on his social media platform. Trump also amplified false posts questioning his right to U.S. citizenship.
