Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley will win the Republican presidential primary in Washington, projects CNN .
Haley's victory — her first in the primary — comes on the eve of what is expected to be a decisive week in the GOP primaries, as she makes a last stand as the race goes national.
Haley's victory, however, was not a huge surprise. Many in Washington believed the location represented their best, and perhaps only, chance of winning the primary.
Trump's dominance over the capital's Republican Party, which has around 22,000 registered voters, has never been a good reflection of his dominance across the country.
Trump won the 2020 primary uncontested, but finished third in the 2016 cycle. Haley held an event on Friday with local Republican Party leaders, a clear sign of optimism.
Most Republicans will now forget about Washington, at least for the next general election. Biden won in 2020 with more than 92% of the vote. The capital has never supported a Republican presidential candidate. The Republican Party's high point came in 1972, when Richard Nixon polled just over 21% during a landslide re-election.
