Nikolai Denkov: Europe must learn its lessons from the war in Ukraine

The Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkof in an interview he gave to the New York Times newspaper he said that Europeans should learn three lessons from the multitude of problems in relation to war in Ukraine.

Denkoff spoke to journalist Steven Erlanger on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

The war in Ukraine was not only about the gray areas between Europe and Russia, Denkov argued, but “if the democratic world that we deeply value and respect can be defeated, and this is now understood in Europe“, the publication states.

Second, European states have realized that they must combine their forces in military efforts, not just economic ones, to create their own deterrence, he said.

And third, European countries had to separate Ukraine's urgent needs for ammunition and air defense from long-term strategic goals.

However, given the imperialist rhetoric of Russia's leadership, long-term in this case means three to five and at most 10 years — which is really urgentDenkof said.

The article also quotes statements from German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Estonian Prime Minister Kaia Kalas and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
