Nikolai of Denmark: «Losing the title of prince? A shocking experience”

Nikolai of Denmark, since last January 1st, is no longer a prince. Queen Margaret II in order to streamline the monarchy, he has in fact removed the titles of Royal Highnesses from both him and the other three sons of his second son Joachim: Felixborn as Nikolai from the union of Joachim with Alexandra Manley; Enrik and Athenafruit of the marriage with Marie Cavallier. The sovereign’s decision has created a serious rift within the Danish royal family, so much so that Joachim has publicly expressed his disappointment: “It’s never fun to see your children abused like that. They themselves are in a situation they don’t understand.”

Now also one of the four “downgraded” royals, the 22-year-old Nikolaihas silence broken. To say clearly that the decision of the sovereign grandmother just did not go down on him. Interviewed by the Danish tabloid Ekstrabladetthe former prince in fact declared: «My whole family and I are obviously very sad. As my parents also stated, we are shocked by this decision and the speed with which it was taken. I don’t understand why it had to happen this way.” Nikolai also spoke to another Danish tabloid, BT. Expressing, again, all his disappointment: «Losing the title of prince? I feel a strange sensation. It’s an experience I would rather not have. But that’s how it is now. And for the rest of my life I will be proud of the years I was a prince of Denmark.” Those years officially ended on January 1st. And the Danish royal house hastened to make the change official on his too websitewhere is it Joachim’s four children no longer appear as princes and princesses but with the titles of counts and countesses.

Margaret II, motivating her decision, had explained that she wanted to look beyond her kingdom. “Having a royal title comes with a series of obligations and tasks, which in the future will affect fewer and fewer family members. I want to make this adjustment, which I consider a necessary guarantee for the future of the monarchy.”he had explained. Adding: “I made my decision as a queen, mother and grandmother, but as a mother and grandmother I underestimated how my youngest son and his family feel.” Words that were not enough to appease spirits: Joachim, also following this novelty, he spent Christmas away from his sovereign mother and has decided to leave the Danish Embassy in Paris, where he now works, to move overseas: to be precise, to Washington, where he will assume a position similar to his current one. In short, the tensions in the family show no sign of abating. And now Nikolai’s words prove it.
