Nikolai of Denmark, the new life of the former prince starts from Instagram

Since last January, 23-year-old Nikolai of Denmark is no longer a prince. Queen Margaret II in order to streamline the monarchy, he has in fact removed the titles of Royal Highnesses from both him and the other three sons of his second son Joachim: Felixborn as Nikolai from the union of Joachim with Alexandra Manley; Enrik And Athenafruit of the marriage with Marie Cavallier. The sovereign’s decision has created a serious rift within the Danish royal family, so much so that Joachim has publicly expressed his disappointment: “It’s never fun to see your children abused like that. They themselves are in a situation they don’t understand.” Meaning what «downgraded» to counts and countesses of Monpezattitles with which they now also appear on the website of the Danish Royal House.

Nikolai himself, in an interview a few days ago, admitted that the decision of the sovereign grandmother really didn’t go down on him: «Losing the title of prince? A shocking experience. My whole family and I are obviously very sad,” he told the Danish tabloid Ekstrabladet. However the 22-year-old, losing his title of prince, has gained many more freedoms. For example, when he was a prince we could only give him a sneak peek through the official profile of the Danish Royal House. Now that he has lost the title (and the burden of royal duty) the bel twenty-twowho has been working for years as modelreaffirmed its independence from the Crown by opening your own personal profile on Instagram. And he inaugurated it with two posts: in the first he shows her first runway for Burberry, «five years ago» (top photo); the second is a gallery of images and videos of his recent ones ski holidays with girlfriend Benedikte Thoustrup (under).

In the Instagram profile, which in just a few days has already reached 20,000 followers, the twenty-two year old introduces himself as Count Nikolai of Monpezat. But many Danish royal fans, apparently unhappy with Margaret II’s decision almost as much as her direct interest, have shown their opposition continuing to define Nikolai, in social messages, «prince». Indeed, “a true prince”, as one user wrote. Or a “super prince-model,” as another added.

The same had happened a few days ago, when the Royal House had celebrated the 11 years old of Nikolai’s stepsister, Athena, with a post in which the little girl was referred to as a «countess». Even then, the Danish royal fans had continued undaunted to call the child “princess”. For example, a royal fan had written: «Best wishes, beautiful princess Athena. To me you are and always will be a princess, never a countess». While another had directly attacked the decision of Margaret II, who “underestimated the sovereignty of the people”.

But Margaret II has decided. And she certainly won’t go back. Because she is convinced that she has to look beyond her realm: «Having a royal title entails a series of obligations and tasks, which in the future will concern fewer and fewer family members. I want to make this adjustment, which I consider a necessary guarantee for the future of the monarchy.”, he had clarified. Adding: «As a mother and grandmother I underestimated how affected my second son and his family would be. And I’m very sorry. My sons, my daughters-in-law and my grandchildren are my great joy and my great pride. Now I hope that our family, in this situation, can find peace”. Words that weren’t enough to appease spirits: not only Joachim he spent Christmas away from his sovereign mother but he has also decided to leave the Danish Embassy in Paris, where he now works, to move overseas.
