Nikon Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S lens introduced

Nikon has unveiled the Nikkor Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S telephoto lens for mirrorless cameras. Its development was announced by the Japanese manufacturer in October last year.

This is Nikon’s first professional telephoto lens designed from the ground up for mirrorless cameras. It has several improvements over its F-mount SLR counterpart.

One of them is the built-in teleconverter, which increases the focal length to 560mm by reducing the maximum aperture to f/4. The new lens is 20% lighter than a SLR lens. The effectiveness of the built-in stabilizer is estimated at 5.5 EV, and when used in conjunction with the Z9 camera, even 6EV.

Other features include the use of a “voice coil” autofocus motor pioneered in Nikon 1 Series lenses. Nikon calls this motor the “Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor”, promising that it will deliver fast, quiet, and very smooth autofocus. Note that the press release cautions that the lens should not be used by photographers with pacemakers.

Another innovation is the Meso Amorphous Coat. It is claimed to be the best anti-reflective coating of any such coating in Nikon’s history. The optical design has 25 elements in 19 groups, including 2 ED glass elements, an ED glass element, 2 fluorite elements, and an SR element that refracts blue light more than red and green light to help correct chromatic aberrations.

The lens diameter is 156 mm, length – 380 mm, weight – 2950 g. The aperture changes in the range f / 2.8-f / 22 (with teleconverter – f / 4-f / 32). The minimum focusing distance is 2.5 m. The magnification is 0.17x (0.23x with teleconverter). The lens accepts filters with a diameter of 46 mm.

The Nikon Nikkor Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S will go on sale in late February for a MSRP of $14,000.
