THE King Charles welcomed the President at noon on Monday Nikos Anastasiadis at his private residence Birchhall on the royal estate of Balmoral in Scotland. With this meeting, the last visit of Mr. Anastasiadis to the United Kingdom as the President of the Republic of Cyprus was completed.
According to the announcement of the presidency the meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere in the presence of the royal wife Camilla Parker Bowles and the first lady of Cyprus, Andris Anastasiadou.
The main topic of the discussion agenda was the Cyprus issue. President Anastasiades, as reported by APE-MBE, informed King Charles about the latest developments in the matter and the challenges of Turkey in the wider region. Also analyzed were bilateral relations Cyprus – United Kingdom which “have been strengthened to a very large extent during the ten-year term of Nikos Anastasiadis at the Presidency of the Republic with the conclusion of very important bilateral Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding”, as stated in the announcement of the Cypriot government representative Marios Pelekanos. In fact, a special mention was made of the initiative of the President of the Republic of Cyprus to take actions aimed at dealing with the consequences of climate change in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean region.
On Saturday the National Cypriot Federation of the United Kingdom honored the outgoing President in a brilliant event in the presence of hundreds of Cypriots from the London community as well as officials. An event that was scheduled to take place for the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus but was initially postponed due to the pandemic and later due to the death of Queen Elizabeth.
Among the guests was the British Under-Secretary of State responsible for European Affairs, Leo Doherty, who in his speech once again emphasized the permanent position of the British government on the solution of the Cyprus issue which, as he pointed out, will be fair and will have a duration so as to “strengthen investment, trade and tourism, thus creating the prospects for a more stable future for all”, as he characteristically underlined.
The event was also attended by Labour’s shadow under-secretary for foreign affairs, Stephen Doughty, who focused on the contribution of the Cypriot community to Britain.
The host of the evening was the president of the National Cypriot Federation, Christos Karaolis. Among other things, Mr. Karaolis referred to the significant and long-term contribution of the British Cypriots to Cyprus, stressing that the Federation will continue to ensure that the Cyprus issue remains on the political and parliamentary agenda of the United Kingdom.
Both the federation and the cross-party parliamentary committee led by Sir Roger Gale honored Mr. Anastasiades who, after giving an account of the government’s work, also emphasized that he would be happier if he spoke as the President of a reunited homeland.
