Nine months after the murder of four-year-old Henry Borel, the story of the crime is told in the book “Henry’s Death Announced Case – The investigation and undisclosed details of the story that shocked the country”.
The work by Paolla Serra, the first journalist to publicize the case in the press, will be released this Thursday (9), in Rio de Janeiro.
The book is the result of eight months of investigation, with the analysis of 1,500 pages of documents, 50,000 digital files and 200 interviews, one of them with Henry’s mother, Monique Medeiros, carried out in the prison where she has been imprisoned since April .
Monique and her then-boyfriend, Councilor Jairo Souza Santos Junior, known as Dr. Jairinho, are accused of Henry’s death.
Paolla Serra opens the book at dawn on March 8, 2021, when the couple entered the Barra D’or Hospital with the child. In the unit, there were almost two hours of unsuccessful resuscitation attempts, as the boy had already arrived dead.
The version presented by the couple, that Henry had fallen out of bed, was soon overturned by expert and autopsy reports, such as the document with the description of the 23 injuries that the child’s body had, with serious internal injuries in various organs.
The investigation ended with the accusation of Monique and Jairinho of triple qualified homicide.
Paolla Serra goes beyond the case, brings the background of the accused, their family life and personal characteristics, such as the similarities of origin in the neighborhood of Bangu, extreme vanity and a taste for designer clothes and fine restaurants.
With a tumultuous love life, with several betrayals in his history, Jairinho meets Monique through social networks, when she was experiencing a crisis in her marriage.
The relationship evolves quickly and, within a few months, they live together in an upscale condominium, where Henry died.
With messages retrieved from the cell phones of those involved in the plot, Paolla Serra says that the couple had a troubled relationship.
The morning after Henry’s death, for example, Jairinho leaves the hospital unannounced and is asked by Monique about where he is: “At the clinic with whom? If you were waiting for me, I would be in the hospital.”
The work advances through the repercussions of the death, such as the contract for nearly R$ 50 thousand that the couple signed with a communication team to publicize their version of the case on social networks; the work of the police and monitoring of Monique and Jairinho for the operation that landed them in jail; changing the defense strategies of each of them; until the first court hearing.
“I tried to shed light on the story, with maximum attention to details and the reports I collected, always checking and rechecking information. My concern was not to make pre-judgments, nor to have a partial vision, as stated in the investigative journalism booklet”, declared Paolla Serra.
