Nio introduced the crossover-record holder: it will travel 920 km on a single charge

While most major US and European car manufacturers are trying to surprise potential buyers with horsepower, Chinese competitors have taken a more practical approach. For example, today, December 26, Nio officially unveiled its latest electric crossover EC7, which has chic aerodynamic characteristics and as a result provides a potential buyer with up to 920 kilometers of range on a single battery charge. Not all ICE cars will be able to drive so many kilometers on a full tank, let alone competing electric cars.

True, in the basic configuration, the characteristics of the car are more modest – for 70 thousand dollars, a potential buyer receives two electric motors on each of the axles with a total power of 644 horsepower, acceleration from standstill to hundreds in 3.8 seconds and a battery capacity of 75 kWh. This is enough for an urban crossover to travel 490 kilometers on a single battery charge, which is practically the gold standard of the industry – the nearest competitors travel about the same. The manufacturer also provides an opportunity for an extra charge to get a battery with a capacity of 100 kWh with a power reserve of 635 kilometers – the cost of this configuration has not yet been reported.

In the top configuration, the manufacturer installs a battery with a capacity of 150 kWh, which is enough to drive 920 kilometers without recharging. True, it is worth immediately clarifying that the manufacturer estimated this power reserve based on the CLTC cycle, which is used only in China. It is quite gentle, so the actual power reserve may differ from what the manufacturer promises. Moreover, in addition to the pleasant “on paper” characteristics, the manufacturer has equipped its crossover with many interesting features that are usually found only on very expensive vehicles. For example, a special panoramic roof with electrochromic glass technology is used here – it is dimmed if necessary by the driver.

In addition, the car is equipped with a fairly advanced system based on lidar, 32 cameras and sensors, as well as an NVIDIA Orin processor. Due to this, the manufacturer, in theory, can implement the technology of unmanned driving of the fourth level according to the SAE specification – the vehicle will be able to move on public roads without driver intervention. True, so far this is only in theory, since to start the company will need to obtain many different permits and conduct a lot of tests in real conditions.
