Nio’s AR glasses add a virtual movie screen right inside the car

William Li, CEO of Chinese car brand Nio, first spoke about augmented reality technologies in upcoming vehicles in December 2021 – then during the presentation, he spoke and even showed an augmented reality cinema that could be launched right in the car. The screen of the virtual cinema boasted a diagonal of 130 inches, but then everyone took it as a common marketing ploy, and today, August 5, Nio officially introduced its augmented reality glasses for motorists. And this is not another crazy concept, but a very real product that is already being sold in China, albeit in a limited edition.

In order to create AR glasses, Nio entered into a partnership agreement with specialists from Nreal, who are working in this direction. Together, the companies have created a finished product that will completely change the way people travel in the foreseeable future. And if Nio previously provided its users with access to an impressive library of films that could be watched on the screen of the vehicle’s multimedia system, now they can be viewed on Nio Air glasses at a much larger diagonal. At the moment, company representatives talk about 260 films with support for Dolby Atmos and 20 films in 3D, but the automotive giant is constantly expanding the library, including with new releases.

At the same time, the company itself believes that the experience of consuming content in AR format can be even better than in the case of VR, if it is implemented correctly. Actually, Nio Air glasses were created specifically for use in a car – they have a higher brightness of the projection of content, while providing impressive autonomy for several hours of watching movies on the road. Unfortunately, there are no exact characteristics of these glasses yet, but if they went on sale, then in a couple of days there will be full-fledged reviews. And it’s certainly a crazy step from flip-up screens and in-car DVD players to a full-blown AR experience.

Currently, AR content technology is available on ET7, ES7 and ET5 vehicles, while ET7 and ES7 flagships will have to request an update to NT 2.0 software, while on ET5 these glasses will work immediately after purchase. And now, apparently, no one will ask questions about the duration of the trip – you can just give each passenger an AR device and launch the latest part of Spider-Man.
