No damage done to nuclear power plant’s reactors, says UN agency

The reactors at Ukraine’s Zaporozhzhia nuclear power plant suffered no damage and there was no leakage of radioactive material after a projectile hit a nearby building overnight, Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Friday. , linked to the United Nations (UN).

Two members of the security team were injured when the shell hit the building overnight, after Ukrainian authorities reported a battle with Russian troops near Europe’s biggest power plant, which is operating at only a small fraction of its capacity – only one of its six units is still working.

“What we understand is that this projectile is a projectile that comes from Russian forces. We don’t have details on the type of projectile,” International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi told a news conference.

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Friday blamed the attack on Ukrainian “saboteurs”.

Grossi showed an aerial photo of the facility with the training building that was hit close but clearly separated from the row of reactor buildings.

The radiation monitoring system at the site was functioning normally and there was no release of radioactive material, Grossi said.

He suggested meeting Russian and Ukrainian officials at the defunct Chernobyl power plant, where Russia seized radioactive waste facilities near the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident in 1986, so they could commit to doing nothing to endanger nuclear security in Ukraine.

The team on duty at Chernobyl has not been changed since it was apprehended last week, despite repeated pleas from Grossi. The situation in Zaporozhzhia was similar as Russia controls it, but the Ukrainian team continues to operate it.

“For now, it is purely a Ukrainian team that is running the operations there. What we have in this case, as we speak this morning at 11:45 am, what we have is in Chernobyl and in Zaporozhzhia, we have effective control of the place in the hands of Russian military forces. I hope the distinction is clear,” Grossi said.
