LastPass Password Manager introduces a new way to access your vault on PC. If earlier users had to enter a master password for these purposes, now they can log in through a mobile application on their smartphone. This method includes the ability to use biometrics – a fingerprint or a face scan.
LastPass describes this as a “passwordless” login, but it’s important to note that the master password isn’t going anywhere, at least not anytime soon. Chris Hoff, a top manager of the company, claims that it is still required for registering on LastPass, adding new trusted devices, as well as making changes to the account, or if an authorization attempt fails. However, there is a possibility that this new approach could be the first step towards completely eliminating the master password as the industry moves towards passwordless authentication using standards such as FIDO.
The new LastPass initiative concerns only users of the service’s desktop clients, which, unlike mobile applications, do not offer any biometric authorization options as an alternative to a master password. The password-free way to access the storage is available to all users of the service, regardless of subscription.
