The Federal Police (PF) informed this Tuesday (20) that there are no more alerts of illegal mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land, in Roraima. According to the satellite systems that monitor the region, the last recorded mining was on May 6, a month and two weeks ago.
Operation Liberation, a government task force with agencies dedicated to combating illegal mining, began on February 10.
According to the PF of Roraima, responsible for the investigations, “this is the first time, since the beginning of this type of monitoring in August 2020, that there has been an absence of mining alerts for such a long period of time”.
The PF says that these results indicate that, for the first time in recent years, there were no new illegal mining areas being explored, an indication that lasts for 33 days, since the final research date was June 8, 12 days ago. Satellite images are processed daily and consolidated every seven days. The next review is next week.
In April and May of last year, 538 alerts were identified and in the same period this year the number dropped to 33, according to the PF.
Operation Liberation is coordinated by the PF and comprises the Army, Air Force, Navy, National Force, Funai, Ibama and PRF. In addition to the support provided in the context of Operation Liberation, the agencies involved continue to carry out their ordinary attributions in the region, exclusively carrying out Union Judicial Police activities to the PF.
Currently, there are more than 80 investigative procedures in progress in the PF derived from Operation Liberation activities that investigate crimes in the most diverse areas, from money laundering and illegal mining to human trafficking.
Terra Yanomami has been in a public health emergency since January 20. Since then, the federal government has acted to curb the crisis by sending health professionals, basic food baskets and removing miners from the territory – the latter has Ibama, the PF, the National Force and the Federal Highway Police as its front line.
