South Korea registered 5,123 new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday (1), a daily record since the start of the pandemic, according to a press release from the Korean Agency for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA).
The KDCA reported that 5,075 of the new infections were locally transmitted, and 4,110 were detected in the Metropolitan Area of Seoul, the capital of the country.
34 deaths were also reported, bringing the total number of deaths to 3,658. About 723 patients are in critical condition, added the KDCA.
Since the start of the pandemic, South Korea has registered a total of 452,350 cases.
As of this Wednesday, 82.9% of the population has received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and 79.9% have been fully vaccinated.
South Korea is investigating at least two suspected cases of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus, and the results are to be released later today.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and the KDCA will form a task force together with the ministries to respond to the new strain.
