No one can keep up with China: Shenzhen alone already has more 5G base stations than all of Europe

The German Business Daily recently published an article reporting that China’s 5G network in Shenzhen already has over 46,000 base stations. In Germany, there are only 850 5G base stations. In other words, Shenzhen is 50 times ahead of Germany in terms of the number of 5G base stations. Currently, China is ahead of not only Germany, but the whole of Europe.

According to the article, German network operators Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica also say they have 5G networks that serve millions of Germans. The problem is they don’t rely on advanced 5G mobile connectivity. Instead, they use cheap software updates to make their existing 4G network 5G-friendly.

This means they are not using a standalone 5G network, which is actually “real 5G.” As a result, customers see the 5G logo on their smartphones, but the actual internet speed remains virtually unchanged.

Shenzhen currently has the highest density of 5G base stations in the world. It is also the first city to have full coverage of independent 5G networks. As of the end of last year, there were 718,000 5G base stations in China, accounting for 70% of the global total. There will be over 1 million 5G base stations in the country this year.
