No progress in ceasefire talks with Israel, says Hamas official

A senior Hamas official, Osama Hamdan, said today that no progress has been made in ceasefire talks with Israel over the six-month-old war in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Islamist movement remains ready to “face positively” any ceasefire proposal that would end the war, Hamdan told a news conference in Beirut. Efforts by Arab countries, with the support of the US, to mediate between the warring parties have so far not led to a truce. Hamas insists that any deal must include an end to the war and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave, while Israel says it will only accept temporary ceasefires until Hamas is eliminated.
